Infrastructure: A Need

Posted: January 4, 2012 in Uncategorized

From old diares…. OCT 2009

This is an article we(Myself and Pradeep) have written two years ago for our institution (Engineering Staff College of India) news letter magazine

The original text:

                          Infrastructure: A need

Suddenly out of the dictionary’s unread portions, this is one of the words which has been used too many times in the recent past and it will stand important for us, for our future. We all now feel the dearth and importance of infrastructure. We all now know, that good infrastructure would have helped us in our development. We have seen the recession in the west and that led to our economic slowdown, thanks to our financial structure.  Several debates arose, and it is expected, had we had, better infrastructure, we could not have faced even that economic slowdown. And even in our last union budget, the need for our infrastructure is addressed and thousands of Crores have been allocated for the infrastructure development.

Leaving aside the routine discussion on what is infrastructure and what to do to develop infrastructure, here we look into the dark(ignored) corners of the same word. So, to develop infrastructure, whom do we need?, the answer is simple, a professional of any chosen field., Engineers in construction and technology related sectors., and doctors, professors in service related sectors. It is the government who governs the education sector, and is partially responsible for the production of good professionals., who are readily preferred to be recruited. Now, most of the companies prefer fresh graduates at the job openings for many reasons, and one major reason in present scenario might be the market economic condition. So, young graduates have opportunity to prove themselves.

A young Engineer will be curious to implement the theories he learnt in believe of the old saying, “Implementation is easy, learning is not”. But do you agree???  I?  Personally not. . . .

Even as an engineer, I do not. A short exposure to management theories made me write this paper for the engineers who are future architects of the nation. The architecture these engineers build, is the infrastructure, on which our nation should stand and run., it directly reflects  the development of our nation. This infrastructure is the tool for many national functions to run smoothly, that would in turn lead to growth in various sectors. And we are always optimistic about every new work/project. So producing good professionals ,(engineers, in this case) is an important task., this can be achieved with the help of good professional institutes. We don’t have any dearth of such institutes here in India, and even board like UGC and AICTE are looking after all the universities, to maintain good standards of professional education throughout the nation.

We are concerned about producing good professionals, and earlier I said, we are optimistic about our every new work/project, this is feasible, as we have good professional institutions, which can produce good professionals; and even we are optimistic about the usage of the outcome. Here comes the question of using the outcome, so rises the question, who uses this infrastructure. We cannot be optimistic in this case. I want to share an old Chinese proverb which says, “To guess is cheap, to guess wrongly is expensive”. Hmm, this might be the reason we are in fiscal deficit with null benefit. Engineers create the new worlds, but these cannot be put into the wrong hands.

Here, I would like to turn our discussion into another dark corner of infrastructure. What all we are discussing here is to identify the factors that would help the nation’s growth. What is a nation?, It is not the collection of buildings, roads, technology or whatever, but the people or we shall say, the citizen. The citizens are what create a nation, and for its growth, what we need is infrastructure. So it is evident that the attitude of a citizen towards the nation, and his character are far more important in a nation’s development/ growth. I would club these attributes under the name, intangible infrastructure. And we can say, the architectural and service related works as the tangible infrastructure for a nation, and when compared with that, this intangible infrastructure is no less important factor in a nation’s growth.

In assessing the infrastructure of our nation, we can clearly say, we lack infrastructure, which is the cause of slow (than normal) growth rate. And we can tell that because, we know how far we stand from the best things in every sector, in the world.  Now, How to asses this intangible infrastructure?. Even I’m new to this word. We can asses that by crime rate and corruption index. It is acceptable if we compare our development with some other countries, but it is not at all acceptable to compare our crime/corruption rate with other countries, and feel happy to stand ahead of others. It is really funny, that I even considered that to write it here.  We are seeing many crimes every day, and corruption is ubiquitous. We are even habituated to this corruption. These are the major hindrances to the growth of any nation. And it is highly impossible to kill these immediately. These can be lessened gradually, and atleast it would take a generation’s time. Generation time, means, the time it would take a child to become a cognizant citizen.

So, here is the answer to my previous question: Who uses this infrastructure?  The citizens of the country. Citizens include common men, politicians, government servants, and everyone who lives in the country. We can get the optimum usage out of the infrastructure we develop, when only we can hand them over to the best and good people to take care of. We can take the example of the recent floods in the Kurnool and Mahbhoobnagar districts of Andhra Pradesh. The government report says that, the backwater of srisailam dam inundated the Kurnool district. And the local politicians are blamed for delaying the release of flood water. The local politicians, who only focused on the benefits of their constituency, delayed the release of water from the dam, which almost inundated the hydel power station. Its lucky that no major damage happened to the dam structure or the power station. Not to forget that we cannot fight the nature., but we have to do everything to our best. The control of the dam, which should be in the hands of engineers is grabbed by the politicians, who are looking for their benefit, to look good to their people. Is it not the greed of some, that many crimes are taking place?. And the outline of this activity can be called corruption.

We have to align the developments of both of these infrastructures, i.e. both tangible and intangible infrastructures. Our government is acting now to the needs of infrastructure development, and these investments stand around 4% of our GDP. And the investments/expenditure related to the intangible infrastructure is investments in elementary, primary and secondary educations. These investments are around 3.1% of our GDP.

My Agrarian nation

65% of Population depend on agriculture sector and allied activities.. Yet only 20% is the sectoral contribution to the GDP and the growth rate is 0.6% annually.
Agriculture sector -65% dependency – 20% of GDP – 0.6% Annual growth
Industries sector – 22% dependency – 27% of GDP – 7-8% annual growth
Service Sector – 11% dependency – 55% of GDP – >12% annual growth

.. All of us who want to sit in corporate offices, earn good bucks and pay taxes.. We are doing only a little for the real progress.
Where is the balanced development/growth in the above numbers?
We are blindly copying the European/West model of living.
Just coz of shortage of currency in the market.. we are encouraging more FDI in the each and every sector by every passing day. It’s not bad as such.. but lack of balanced growth kills the basic idea.
The Agri statistics above.. 65% of the population depends on agriculture sector.. the sad part is 2,50,000 farmers committed suicide in the last decade in India, 25000 of them from Andhra Pradesh. This is not for a blame game for the governments.. this is to highlight our misconception that we have to become industrial economy just to mimic the European/ west world. Ours is the Agrarian nation and we have to build only on our foundation,at least the focus should not be lost.

It is suggestible that we need more intelligent investments in the Agriculture sector,

  • to improve the quality of the delivery of agricultural products,
  • to improve the agricultural market infrastructure
  • to Ensure value for money through out the supply chain
  • to protect the farming community,
  • increase demand for the organic products, and
  •  to carry forward indigenous knowledge
  • reduce usage of chemical fertilizers.
  • to do good.

all these investments need not be from rich industrialists. I find many of my friends wishing to be entrepreneurs, and this has been the idea of most of today’s Indian youth. No particular statistics needed.:)

Agriculture is a Good sector. .. it is not rocket science, It has been the basic activity for the survival of any civilization. Now that we are living in this knowledge economy, we have to blend the worldly information with the local knowledge with a want for better food for the market, not damaging our environment along . the advantage here is:  Our activity keeps us connected to our food we eat daily. :)
We have to make sure that we seed a positive change for the future. Invest yourself in the good technologies (Good Technology does mean imported equipment.. it can be indigenous knowledge too) and lets pave way for clean future.
just we need to brainstorm for deciding a  trade-off between “whats profitable to our pocket today” Vs “Whats good for our society and what pays-back greatly in  future”. Lets have a development vision not a financial one. :)

My thought of giving up my two-wheeler for ‘environmental friendly’ causes a year ago, is making me lucky and happy. Now I’m more comfortable using the public transport., habituated. Now I need not worry about the petrol price rises anymore. Today it is Rs 70/ liter , soon it will reach 100/liter. I welcome with this with happiness. even though it affects Public transport systems and my travel expenses may raise, I’m happy with the petrol price hike. I’m waiting for people to think for an alternative. No one but you and me can help us from those who still stick to their personal luxuries.

BTW., Public transport is my luxury:

  • I need not worry about traffic., just hang in the bus.
  • Need not worry abt the fuel price, the transporter will look after it.
  • No Periodic maintenance burdens and analyses, the transporter will look after that.
  • No becoming fatter. Need to walk little distances, will work as a daily little exercise, stamina might improve.
  • You have to sweat it out sometimes, healthy.
  • No pollution burden, emission optimization.
  • Time wasted in traffic?, have a  nap.
  • Can avoid looking at the traffic and road, half of your day, you get to see different personalities while you are in public transport.
  • Dont want the ruckus? put plugs to your ears. Don’t have them, some buses play music/FM for you.
  • Time wasted?, every one comes out with an innovation for their time management.

I’m proud, my luxury is a public good.

Now it is a decision to make.

When people choose a public-transport option over a personal vehicle We can see

  • less congestion on roads( whoa.. wait.. I’m not telling you to go& enjoy the empty roads.. Wait a while to see a positive effect)
  • less pollution to our noses, ears and eyes.
  • Faster travel in public transport.
  • But the only problem is, congested public transport services.

Our govt, LPGized after 1991, wasted too much of money through public, by allowing us to purchase as many vehicles (also) as possible, to promote the industry. MoEF- Go to Hell!.Govt definitely will not and cannot invest good money to multiply the present City transportation infrastructure. Now it is the time for public to take another wise decision, invest in public transport infrastructure for our own benefit.

And also, There should be cars. I’m not against them. I love them for my Parents and grand parents. Not for me and the energetic you.

What immediate analysis can i do now. This is the 9th hike in petrol prices in the last nine months. And somewhere i also read .. it took 20 yrs for petrol price to rise from 8 to 58. And now to 70 in just 6 months. I’m happy, some of my friends are sad. some don’t care, opposition cries against the govt, which is not anyone fault. Leave all this to hell and just decide. I want my friends and their brothers and sisters and their cousins and aunts and uncles to act NOW.  huh.

Its my habit, i never stick to a point, and I don’t know if i made any point clear . If you got anything, positive and negative, share it.

Great you lasted this longer.!

My Faith

Posted: May 9, 2011 in Uncategorized

I wanted to speak again. Again on my faith. because of ‘certain section of the people reacting to Osama bin laden’s death’. This made me think again., on what am I.

I belong to no religion., My faith is not a religion unlike Islam/christianity/buddhism/any-other-religion. This is an eternal policy(u can say philosophy) of life., which is the most tolerant to all forms of lives and life styles. This Faith is about existence, but not about the form of life. You are living., means u belong to my faith. You are not living.. u still belong to my faith. If You are a human being , You belong to my faith, and if You are not a human being, you still belong to my faith. This is the Trueness which respects the existence of everything ( some say “creations of god” ).Thus this philosophy respects every creation of God. If there is one God, of whom we don’t know about the existence at all, we don’t even know the number of gods we have. And this respects the common acceptance of existence of the ultimate-super-power/The-Big-bang/The-creator-of-bigbang=TIme. Freedom is the essence of this life. This Philosophy of life, to imbibe a uber-tolerance into its followers, has a ‘caste’ system for the non-technological world., where all the works/jobs required for a society’s existence are divided and allotted to separate lineages, where in one excels in the profession of his lineage. which has very little meaning now,  after the mixture of cultures and people fighting over each other, and branding these followers of this philosophy as “you are Hindu”, and “you have these Bounds” , If looked in true essence.. there are no boundaries. Unfortunately.. the brand remained in the craze for discrimination. Even the much new( and ignored) madness of the intelligent people to motivate people to become eco friendly/environmental friendly.. is what this faith is about. To respect every element of the environment (Earth -as created by God), for the sustainablility of every life. Why the bloody cry about declining numbers of tigers in the forests of India. And this has been identified on many facebook walls of not just few people. but of many people (including christians/hindus/muslims and others).

And I have a Venn diagram, which shall yell my thoughts

My-Faith
My Faith . People Call it Hinduism.

It is not by any process/ritual that you start believing in this faith. Your refined thought process shall make you automatically added/elevated to this faith. Love all hate none. This is what one of the followers of this faith (by default) Mr Jesus Christ has said “”I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you” along with much more good.

There is no point for me/or other followers of this faith, to love/ to hate any of christians/Moslems/Buddhists or to have any attachment/enmity with any person of any thoughts. But have to act with a progressive thought for the sustainable existence of future on this earth (or the creation of the god).

“It is not by any process/ritual that you belong to this faith” Nor your birth to such a follower make you one.  Your action that bind you to the service of the lifebeing of the present and future, makes you a follower of this philosophy. Surprisingly that also makes you a leader.

This philosophy is presently being called by the name – hinduism. and the name is misused too.

Whats is the name.. Everything lies in your action. Who call themselves Hindus/muslims/christians/whatever are just being so for the namesake, and I see examples everyday.

Early hours of the Last Day

Posted: December 31, 2010 in Memoirs

The early hours of the last day in the Year 2010.Almost 2 hours on Face book. Something triggered my  mind, and I decided to type.

Opened Face book As usual. I know the date is 30 December. Anyone can expect what an ordinary wall of Facebook reads ahead of a most awaited day. And could see at least half of my friends being nostalgic about 2010 and very optimistic about 2011. Now I’m lured into this trap. First, i was conspired to make a Resolution.  Which i denied. BUt this crazy mind and free early hours and sleeplessness… All clubbed together resulted in what you are reading.

I became nostalgic..  Before these ephemeral thoughts wane away, I should put them into words.  AArgh.. I can’t type faster.. I’m losing thoughts in searching for the keys on this keyboard..  I’m forgetting things faster than it took to recollect.

Ok. Only ‘past perfect’ talk now:

‘It all went haphazardly, through a single continuous line called me’

As ever, never excited about the new year.. This is about 2010. 2nd sem of my Infrastructure Management already started, a month ago.! But still we are searching for Mr.pathak. Oh. He entered into a relationship with his girlfriend, oh no! he slipped in his toilet and broke his…. Oh no.. He got married.. for a dowry!, Oh.. Akash could add masala to Anshul’s absence. Finally Pathak, arrived, and all those remained funny imaginations.  But that one person.. ( Susmita sen of Main hoon Na).. Never turned up..

The same time around.. The root cause of this blog has occurred…  I created an account in Facebook.  If there is any physical inactivity that can be inferred, Facebook definitely has a share in the blame!

In the shortest month, colors in the classroom swinged more than moods. As always, career focussed person, keep worrying about where they would land for internship., And Results of First semester announced.. (Some faculty told. You are purchasing your degree, why would you worry about the result..) That’s not the idea, but some of us were really cool about the result. Because half of them put real efforts and rest of them knows, there’s no need for effort.

Another Major issue raised up.. The much hyped international tour,( Which robbed my pocket, when it finally happened). No one was sure about  what is international about the tour.. the destination, the organizations, going to visit.. A nd the basic thing.. How much it is going to cost. I declared.. I’m not going to spend more than 15K. So it went.. Nothing finalized.. This shortest month almost went eventful. March went fast march.. or I’m not able to recollect. Most of the time wasted in the faculty’s worry to attack the syllabus! The festival started, with Ugadi and Sri ramanavami.. I didn’t remember i wished anyone.. but thankful, i didn’t obstruct any happy ways.  Everyone kept busy arranging for their passports, and related documents for the Int’l tour, scheduled for April. I was cool( & little unhappy) , its costing at least 20K, so  didn’t want to think abt it.

And Yes. Thanks to my Dad! he asked abt the tour, and just gave a blank cheque (haha) , and ordered to have the trip. The fools month arrived, All fools are happy now , almost everyone ready for this Malaysia, Singapore visit.(Finally I knew, where we are going). Kiran, and Viswanath.. Missed you two in the tour.  You two would have made us enjoy two times more. This tour is a big diary…… Big Fullstop here. Just back from tour, back into the academic rumble, class, internal, external..

The so-called (name sake ) summer month. just to remind- in south, we have 6 month summer, Exams in the first half.  We are about to join the Indus Towers. (OMG, the world’s largest telecom tower builder, operator),Being a Telecom ECE graduate, I was self offered to work with them. I believe, i tried to work. . And Yeah, KK also did his internship in Hyd, so, got some evenings to spend on terrace.. Oh these evening meets with KK, the topics range from moon to moan.

Mean Time, Flashback in Flashback . A meet with school friends. Happy to spend time with Harsha, Sarvan and Chaitanya. All super cool. happy going. Happy meet.

The month of first rains:   ThankGod, We are back to normal life. as always time didn’t stop and  we are back in college to join the 3rd semester classes. Some of our friends wanted to extend their holidays( oops!,  internship). And so, the activity started in July.

By this time we understood that ‘Susmita Sen’ is not Coming back.   (… trying to recollect… ) , with intermediate rains, and a permanent place for an umbrella (for the rain), in my bag., still sleeping in my bag.  A point worth remembering: Some time this month, we went to NAtional Academy of construction, and happened to listen to a lecture by Dr. N. Sai Bhaskar,CEO of G.E.O. This is person, is a good environmentalist, great motivator, and a friend now. The same time, We met Dr. B.K.D Raja, MD, Samaj Vikas. an environmentalist and  A good business maker, who deals with social development projects. Both of these (Dr BKDR & DR NSBR) helped us(me and Pradeep) in looking at Environment management from two opposite directions.

September, october and november.. Classes + Exams + More Fun than ever.

( Feeeeling Sleeepy) Early hours turning into early morning..

The GEO part of the Year

In September and October, and December, Me and Pradeep visited the GEO, research center, each time with some more friends joining us. The 3rd week od december is a celebration in janagon, under the name GEO spirit. Each time, getting closer to the Environment.

November has been a little different. In or college,  a new susmita sen, we could see now.. Also, a slew of changes in the home. My sis arrived home ( expecting a baby..  what else to say). Exams time, my parents were of a misconception that, i wanted to study, and they are disturbing me.  After the whole month of exams, followed by birthday party at Anshul’s place, I returned home to a joyous environment., A cute little princess is a part of my family now. In january should see, how empty the home would be, when my sis returns back to B’lore.

The Ramagundam visit (for the NTPC’s Thermal Power plant) , helped us to get more closer with our juniors. Oh I forgot to recollect (??) . As we entered into 3rd sem, obviously a new batch entered 1st sem..

And Also The Fourth Sem Started, with all new enthusiasm and confusion about Final Sem PPP. Every one has their own definition for PPP. Atique should be remembered for his PPP requirement with the college. Project+Placement+Package.

Feeling better now.

Posted: September 23, 2010 in Green Blogs, Memoirs
About the day that started the 2 nights before..
No more college for the next 5 days…
Blank in mind..  no planned schedule..
the idea of a pilgrimage striked..
next day.its sunday..thought to team up wid friends to plan any such thing…
Before anything could materialize an sms from pradeep.. reminded about Dr NSBR.(Dr Nakka Sai Bhaskar Reddy), CEO, Geoecological Energy Organisation.
(He has his own style- eco friendly Environment research center.)
Now we decided to visit his research center, and thought we should call him.
Sunday laziness made me to call him in the later noon, by which time, he started from his home to the research center.
And he asked us to come over by evening , have a stay in his eco-house., so that we can feel the diff between the traditional mud-made house and a concrete structure.
But, we, to avoid luggage of a night stay, chose to go next day but started off very early in the morning.
We started at abt 4.40am from my house to the Malkajgiri railway station. parked our vehicle, got the ticket and waited for the Krishna Express.
Boarded the train 5.10am. Then Had a pack of good-day biscuits for breakfast-mini(@sec’bad station). train reached janagoan, as we discussed on many things.
had the breakfast partII near the Janagoan bus stand, called Dr NSBR and got the directions on how to get to his place.
Boarded an auto-rickshaw, went to Singaraju palli,Devaruppala mandal , warangal Dt..(3 kms from the research center in the pedda maduru). We had the Breakfast Part-III, another pack of biscuits in thea auto-rickshaw. We reached the village singaraju palli.
Mr Naresh, one of Dr NSBR’s associate at the Research center, came to Singarajupalli , to pick us up to the GEO_RC.
By 8.30 we reached.

The site.._GEO_RC

Blank on mind, on what should we discuss.
We introduced ourselves to Dr NSBR ,and he introduced us to his another associate Mr Mahesh.
We were asked to take some rest, during while Dr NSBR had a bath, and refreshed his associates abt their schedule today.. They’ve got a meeting  with the distributing agents of the ‘Good Stoves’ being designed by Dr NSBR.
(The good stoves concept available at www.e-geo.org, www.goodstove.com)
[BTW: he's not a bussiness man. He beleves in open knowledge, and shares any info, anyonewants, which could help the environment and society. refer to www.e-geo.org . He's trying to sell as many goodstoves(manchipoyyi) he designed, so that the villagers, who don't have access to the subsidised connections, can maximize the utilization of the firewood. He claims , his stove reduces the amount of firewood they usually consume, for their daily purposes, to upto 60%.]
We now had a more than little chat with him, under tree shade, on a lot of little issues.
He explained abt the new hall, being constructed at the site., with his newly designed biochar bricks. he explained the benefits of those bricks.
Time for breakast part IV.We had a little upma, cooked by his associates,& somayya.By now Another of his associates Mr Ramu (pursuing MBA ) came there.
Forgot to mention.. All his office associates are MBA grads.
by around 2pm, the agents arrived. agents are small time businessmen from surrounding villages, each one from a different village. We also took part in the meeting, which was an interactive session. Dr NSBR explained to the new agents , the benefits of goodstoves to the society and environment. And tried to clarify their doubts, and motivate them in selling more stoves.
[Dr NSBR is working for charity.. but all these people might not be ready to work for charity]
The meeting lasted for more than an 90 mins. Now we had lunch, aloo curry , sambar, curd. good lunch. And after the lunch agents left the place.
Dr NSBR had a review of activities with his associates, then finished the day,
During his review, we spent time taking pics of the premises and had a good time with jangoan born sweety(the sweet puppy… veeri ammagaaridi Janagoan). In toto We had a good day with the environmentalist, and his activities at his Research center.
The team with the visitors

With the team GEO_RC

By Five in the evening we started off to Hyd, dropping off Mr Ramu at Janagoan., And Dr NSBr met the sikh family, who have been doing the metal works, in making ‘the goodstove’.. With 15 stoves loaded in the car, we three rode off to Hyderabad (towards the west). Being the sunset time, we enjoyed the scenic views all along the road. Saw some ganeshas near Bhuvangiri getting readied for nimajjanam. ANd by the time we reached Uppal ring road, it is 7.30 pm. And reached our homes in an hour.
I just reworked in mind.. this is nothing less than a pilgrimage., we went to see activities which respect our environment, from which do we derive our deities. So, had a double satisfaction.
____
All technical details about the activities carried out by Dr N.Saibhaskar are neatly described in his websites mentioned above.

What a day it was

Posted: August 17, 2010 in Memoirs

What a day it was.
morning..it was shiny
A ride across Hitex, …in a M800 95 model..
A series of lectures extending from bore to  ‘wanting for furthermore’
The noise during the lectures was not that aloud.. but at lunch i could notice overcrowd,
the last lecture(by Mr SNAhmed  was very good)
the day seemed to end, but
at the point of ‘we want no more’, there started a heavy pour,
We waited in for the rain to stop., but the rain made our wait to stop
made me to walk in the dull rain to the MMTS station, around 2 kms away.
Its a rainy day for the sky..but for hyderabad it will be a drainy day..
walking over the drains.. we reached the place where we catch trains
After i got the ticket for the train , the train never seemed to come.
though it came.. there seemed no place to board it.
Enjoyed my 2kms foot-board travel in the mmts train on a rainy day..
If my family reads this.. there will be a furious fray..
Finally reached the home within(&away-from) home. at 8pm
And this message is my first reaction.,
i can no more ignore rats running in my stomach..
what a day it was..
